Japan Adoption Update

Within the last year, two of BC's licensed agencies added Japan to their list of intercountry adoption programs. Both offer a small number of spots to families who meet Japan's requirements.

To date, only a handful of approved BC families have been matched or brought children home - including at least one family who was on the ground when last week's earthquake and tsunami hit.

I called the BC agencies this week to check in and see what - if anything - had been decided about Japan's adoption program. Both report that they are on "standby" awaiting any news. The agencies also reported that their orphanages are located far from Sendai and were not impacted by the earthquake or tsunami.

Families currently registered to adopt from Japan should check with their agency for updates. Please visit
Sunrise or Choices for new information as it becomes available.

While we wait, please remember Japan and her people. Consider donating to the Red Cross or another registered charity.
